Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Iliotibial Band Syndrome or Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome (IT Band) is a condition that causes knee pain and is a sports injury sometimes experienced by athletes in sports like running, cycling or any activity that places stress and repetitive motion on the knee.

The Illiotibial band is a thick band of fascia that connects the hip (ilium or pelvis) to the tibia in the lower leg near the knee joint.

Since the IT Band runs over the lateral femoral condyle of the femur excessive repetitive movement of knee can result in inflammation and pain on the lateral aspect of the knee.

Pain is noticed just above the knee and is sometimes described as a burning or stinging sensation. Sometimes pain is felt along the entire length of the iliotibial band and causes pain on the lateral side of the leg in addition to pain in the knee.

Treatment consists of RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) in the acute phase. Our doctors and therapists provide treatment for Iliotibial Band Syndrome at Vitality Health New York in Midtown Manhattan, New York to help you quickly return to all your athletic activities.
