Achilles Tendon Injury Treatment

The achilles tendon connects the muscles of the lower leg, which is the plantaris, gastrocnemis and soleus muscles, to the calcaneus (heel bone).

Achilles tendon injuries can occur from to wearing down of the tendon or from a sports injury.

Chronic inflammation of the achilles tendon can lead to achilles tendonitis and further overuse may develop into achilles tendonosis. Tendonosis is a degenerative condition and is confirmed with a MRI.

Achilles tendon rupture can be either partial or complete and will need additional medical attention to help with recovery.

Initial treatment may consist of immobilization, physical therapy, orthotics and conditioning exercises. In some cases surgical intervention is necessary to reattach the achilles tendon to its attachment at the calcaneus bone.
